How to Think About Your First Career Decision

By Deepak Sogani

"Most graduating students carry an unspoken anxiety: that their very first job or postgraduate choice will lock them into a lifelong trajectory. It won't."

The Myth of the Perfect Beginning

When you are 21 or 22, the pressure to make an optimal, flawless choice is immense. Campus placements, peer comparisons, and parental aspirations all conspire to make you feel that a single mistake will permanently derail your trajectory.

Across my 35 years in corporate leadership and higher education, I have watched hundreds of careers unfold. The single most liberating truth young people discover is this: your first job is not your final destination; it is an apprenticeship.

What Your First Role Actually Needs to Give You

Rather than obsessing over whether the job title sounds prestigious, evaluate your earliest choices against three practical criteria:

  • A Culture of Accountability: Does this environment expect you to take real responsibility for outcomes, or are you just a spectator?
  • Mentorship and Feedback: Is there someone you can observe whose work ethics, judgment, and communication you would genuinely like to emulate?
  • Transferable Execution Muscle: Are you learning how to write concise emails, manage timelines, navigate friction, and solve messy problems?

Treat Early Choices as Hypotheses

In science, a hypothesis is not an irreversible commitment; it is an informed guess designed to generate real data. Treat your early career decisions similarly. Choose a direction that aligns with your current curiosities, commit to it wholeheartedly for 18 to 24 months, observe what you learn about your strengths and dislikes, and then adjust your course with evidence.

Action creates clarity. Waiting for clarity before taking action only breeds paralysis.
