College Isn't the Same as Career: Navigating the Space In Between

By Deepak Sogani

"The academic world rewards you for getting 95% on a syllabus someone else wrote. The professional world asks: what problems can you identify and solve when there is no textbook?"

The Unspoken Cultural Shock

During my five years leading student affairs at university, I saw brilliant academic toppers stumble when entering their first jobs, while students with average marks flourished. Why? Because the rules of university and the rules of adult life are fundamentally different.

In college, timelines are pre-defined, exams have answer keys, and your primary responsibility is your individual performance. In professional life:

  • Problems arrive without warnings or answer sheets.
  • Individual brilliance is useless if you cannot communicate and collaborate with colleagues across different backgrounds.
  • Being reliable, punctual, and emotionally balanced matters far more than having the highest GPA.

Developing Personal Ownership

The single most important muscle you can build before leaving university is ownership. When something goes wrong on a student project or in a team setting, do you blame the circumstances, or do you step forward and ask: "What can I do to fix this right now?"

Mentoring at Second Innings is designed around this exact transition: moving a young person from passive recipient of education to active author of their professional life.
